Living on leftovers

January 4th, 2007 at 05:25 pm

I haven't spent any money on groceries in the past five days. We are eating out of the freezer, and I've been making bread. I had milk in the freezer, too.
Two days, I made pork chops and rice, and French dip, and three days, I made fajitas, from the leftover pork, and made beef and noodles, and beef and barley soup. Made two loaves of Cuban bread tonight. ( Tightwad Gazette recipe), and it was really good, on a cold, rainy night, with the soup.
If I can refrain from spending any money on groceries, for the next two weeks, the money in the food envelope, for the first week in January, is going into the challenge! I know I can do it! Fortunately, the freezer is full!
Thanks, for the recipes that have been posted recently. More would be great!

Ah, the real challenge comes when the freezer is empty! :-)

Good work! I've always wanted to try the Cuban bread myself but never got around to it.

We're living out of our pantry, too. Fortunately we have a pretty well stocked one. By the time February rolls around, it might not be so well stocked but we'll manage! I have some more recipes to post and will do that tonight and in the morning. They're my "desperate measures" recipes and you're welcome to them. Smile

I will be looking forward to the recipes. Fortunately our freezer is very full. My husband is a hunter, and we have lots of elk meat. In fact we have too much elk meat, so gave lots of it to one of the "poorer" kids. We have just about everything but the tenderloin ground into burger. It doesn't save money, because of the cost of the elk tag, the hunt, and the processing, but makes DH feel like the "Pioneer provider" !

The Cuban bread is so good, and easy to make, and makes the BEST toast.

I guess I need to try the cuban bread, though it won't be good for the blood sugar. The younger ones might like it, though!

Nance, how do you do your french dip?
