Vonage: Pros and Cons?

February 13th, 2007 at 06:23 pm

I have an offer from Vonage for a free month. Can anyone offer any information about it and say if it is really better than another phone service?
How much does it cost, after taxes and fees?
I realize it will differ from state to state, but would like a general idea.
Thanks for any input.

it's 24.99 a month for us (on Central Coast of California) it includes free unlimited local and long distance calling (for us also free international calling to UK, France and Germany as well which is great because I have a niece in GB and some relatives in Ireland). The call quality is excellent, their customer service is friendly and their bills are never delayed (like SBC was). We like them a lot. For our long distance calls to Mexico we use phone cards because it seems to be a little cheaper. We are saving approximately $50 per month with Vonage. Hope this helps.

Cons to any VOiP (Voice Over IP) phone service is to remember that if your internet goes down your phone goes down as well. Otherwise, from what I've heard people like it. Smile

It is great and depending on how many calls you make, it can be even less. They have a "basic" plan that is only $14.99 for 500 minutes a month (plus additional taxes, etc. bringing it to around 18.50-19.00). If you use additional minutes it is like 3.9 cents. Figure 200 extra minutes would be $7.80 and you are at something like $25-$27.00, less than the $24.99 unlimited calls (adding taxes and stuff). Check out their web site for the best plan option for you.
The only problem I have had is that the caller ID doesn't work every time that it should. As far as internet going down, you can have calls forwarded to a cell phone or other phone and if that doesn't work, they have voicemail. If you buy an auto switch, you can have a fax hooked up to the same line if you need to without getting the additional line - it works well, too.
For us it has worked out well and I figure we save a minimum of $50.00 a month!
